Move repository to a common group/organisation
We have discussed move the ownership of this repository to a common group so that several people have ownership.
I have discussed this with the EMBL git admins and they have created a special group for this.
However, it turns out that if we host the repository why git.embl.de
it is not possible for users that are not inside of EMBL to make issues or PRs (this ofc true for the current repository as well).
Also, there are no real upsides in terms of available storage space when using git.embl.de
compared to vanilla gitlab.
So, I would vote for hosting the repository somewhere else to allow for outside issues and PRs.
We could either go to github or gitlab.
Pros / Cons:
- Github
- Greater visibility
- Allows max repo size of 100GB
- BUT max file size is restricted to 100 MB
- Gitlab
- Max file size is 200 MB by default and can be expanded
- BUT max repo size is 10GB
I have checked, and the largest tables we have seem to be < 50 MB, so the max file size should not be an issue. Hence I would opt for github, but I don't really mind either way. I think both options have the downside that we would loose the current issues, but these should be quick to replicate.
Any thoughts @tischer @meechan @zinchenk @vergara?
P.S. In the process I would rename the repository to mmpb-backend
.
